HHS Theatre Program Nominated for TAMY Awards -

The Hudson High School Theatre program was nominated for several Central Massachusetts High School Musical Theatre Awards (The TAMYs):

  • Best Set- Cinderella
  • Best Costumes- Cinderella
  • Not Your Average Chorus Member- Ricky Gelin, Erica Davis, Sammi Waldsmith- Cinderella
  • Best Featured Ensemble- Brooke Mega and Sammy Myette- The Step Sisters- Cinderella
  • Best Featured Actress- Carly Usherwood- Sally- You're a Good Man Charlie Brown
  • Best Supporting Actress- Laura Girard- Lucy AND Fairy Godmother- Charlie Brown AND Cinderella
 
Jeannie Graffeo - 2012 MA Elementary PE Teacher of the Year Award -

Jeannie Graffeo received the 2012 Elementary Teacher of the Year award from the Massachusetts Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.  She is recognized for her excellent PE instruction and the quality of the curriculum that she has developed for Mulready and Hubert Elementary schools and sharing with other Hudson Physical Education staff.   Please see the March 15th article posted in the  Hudson Sun. Three HHS Students Compete at State Science Fair -

Three Hudson High School students competed at the State Science and Engineering Fair on Friday, May 4 at MIT.  Kathryn Volk and Shannon Hogan won an honorable mention for their project entitled Graywater Greenhouse. Haley Nelson won a third place award and received a $20,000 scholarship for UMass Lowell for her Engineering project was entitled Re-working Water Working.

 
School Committee to Consider 1:1 Computing Plan -

 The Hudson School Committee will consider approval of a technology plan for the school system (1:1 computing) at its May 8th meeting. Goals for the proposed plan and an implementation schedule can be seen on the District 1:1 page.

 
Hudson High School Students Visit Beacon Hill -

Students on Beacon HillTwo Hudson High School students Randy Karlson and alternate Paige Kane visited Beacon Hill on Friday, April 13, 2012. The students began their day with a mock public hearing moderated by Senator Hen Flanagan. Representing Rep. Aguiar of Fall River both students debated and voted on two pieces of mock legislation (refusing driver's licenses to truant students and a mandatory 10-hour community service requirement for high school graduation).  The students were later invited to Rep. Varsity Hockey Captures the 2012 Division 3 State Championship -

Congratulations to the Varsity Boys' Hockey Team for capturing the 2012 Division 3 State Championship on Sunday, 3/18/12.  The Hawks defeated the Medway Mustangs 5-1 at the TD Garden in Boston in front of a huge crowd proudly displaying their red and white.  The championship caps off a tremendous hockey season.  Congratulations and thank you to Coach Nanartowich, his staff, the players, the parents, and the fans!  A special thank you to those of you who have chaperoned the tournament games.  

 
Hudson Teacher Named Physical Education Teacher of the YearHudson Teacher Named Physical Education Teacher of the Year -

Jeannie Graffeo was recently named Physical Education Teacher of the Year by the Massachusetts Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (MAHPERD). School Committee Reviewing 2012-2013 School Calendar -

The Hudson School Committee is reviewing the preliminary School Calendar for 2012-2013. The Committee discussed the calendar at its March 13th meeting and will consider approval at its March 27th meeting. Feedback from parents, staff and the public can be addressed to the superintendent.      Calendar Draft

PK-12 Choral Concert March 24 and 3 Elementary Concerts -

HPS Choral Concert (featuring grades preK through 12)
Saturday, March 24, 2012 @ 1:00PM at the HHS auditorium

 The following 3 music concerts feature the same program, but with students of each school.  The concerts are each titled "Music through the Decades":

 "Arts Night" (featuring the 4th & 5th grade choruses and the Art work of Forest Ave School)
Wednesday, May 30, 2012 - Concert is from 6:30-7:30 on the Forest Ave stage

 "Night of the Arts" (featuring the 4th & 5th grade choruses and the Art work of Farley School)
Thursday, May 31, 2012 - Concert is from 6:30-7:30 on the Farley stage

 "Music through the Decades" (featuring the 4th & 5th grade choruses of Mulready School)
Friday, June 1, 2012 - 1:15-2:15 - In-school concert for Whole-School and Families

 
Worcester Regional Science and Engineering Fair -

Three Hudson High School students attended the Worcester Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Friday, March 9 at WPI. Shannon Hogan and Kathryn Volk  took home a third place award.  Their project title was "Alternative Septic System: Is It Worth It?" Haley Nelson took home a fifth place award/honorable mention. Her project title was "Re-Working Water Working".  They also took home some cash awards. Kat, Shannon and Haley all worked very hard and did a super job presenting their projects.  All three students can now proceed to the State Science Fair competition on May 4. 

 
The HHS Chapter of Business Professional of America Club -

Congratulations to the 14 Hudson High School students who attended the Business Professionals of America annual State Leadership Conference this past weekend (March 3-5). Students have been preparing for the conference since the beginning of the year and competed in various competitions.  Josh Nasiatka and Anna Periera placed 3rd in the Web team competition.  Josh Nasiatka also 2nd in the web fundamentals competition.  Rachel Matthew and Amber Winske placed 1st in the Presentation Management team competition.  The National Conference will be held from April 25-29 in Chicago.

 
Policies on Athletic Concussions and Service Animals -

The Hudson School Committee will consider the adoption of two new policies at its regular meeting on March 13, 2012. A new policy on head injuries and concussion in extracurricular athletics is now required as the result of legislation. This is a comprehensive policy that includes procedures used in the prevention of repetitive concussions and the actions taken when a student-athlete receives a blow to the head. The proposed policy goes beyond the requirements to include procedures for re-entry to academics after a concussion.

Service Animals is a required policy related to the rights of disabled students to use service animals in school. Public input on these policies can be directed to the Superintendent.

 H.H.S. All-School Musical: Cinderella, March 7-11, 2012 H.H.S. All-School Musical: Cinderella, March 7-11, 2012 -

On March 7-11, 2012 audiences will have the pleasure of seeing Hudson High School’s All-School Musical Cinderella.  Written by the amazing team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, Cinderella is the classic fairy tale of a young woman, Cinderella (Carly Usherwood), forced into a life of servitude by her cruel stepmother (Laura Fagan) and self-centered stepsisters (Brooke Mega and Sammy Myette), who dreams of a better life. With the help of her Fairy Godmother (Laura Girard), Cinderella is transformed into a Princess and finds her Prince (Edward Andrews).

David J. Quinn Middle School -

February 15, 2012 The Hudson School Committee unanimously approved a proposal to rename the Kennedy Middle School, scheduled to open in September 2013, the David J. Quinn Middle School.

Turning Education Into Art Form (MWDN) -

HHS Students Excel in Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Awards -

 12 Hudson High Students won14 Boston Globe Scholastic Art and Writing Awards in the 2012 competition. 14 other HHS entries received Honorable Mention.The awards included 4 Gold Keys and 10 Silver keys.  Congratulations to the winners and to the High School for supporting a high level of participation.   See list of award winners.  Congratulations also to teachers Erin Yates, Emily Farbman, Kerri LeSage, Jenna Johnson, and Bruce Hedison, as well as all District art staff for preparing our students for this prestigeous event.  See samples of student work.

 
HHS Asst. Principal Josh Otlin Featured in "Inspired Teaching" Award Publication -

At the end of the month, Facing History and Ourselves will present $40,000 to educators around the world as part of its annual Margot Stern Strom Teaching Awards. In this series, we check in with winners from 2007. Profiled here is Josh Otlin, assistant principal at a Massachusetts high school.

JFK Students Join Global Photo Project -

Ms. Tobiasson and Mr. Nemerowicz’s Pearl Team ELA and Social Studies students participated in a program called Take Ten through the East West Center.  The Take Ten project was viewed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the Asia conference this week and was part of a report on National Public Radio.

In Take Ten, students take photos in their communities to illustrate how trade shapes local aspects of global issues.  In the second stage students assemble their photos into stories that inform, engage, educate, and mobilize people.

HHS Student's Art Displayed By President's Commission on Arts and the HumanitiesHHS Student's Art Displayed By President's Commission on Arts and the Humanities -

It was a great honor for 2011 HHS graduate Rebekah Lizotte to win a national medal for her photograph "Chalk Shadow" when she was named one of 500 National Medalists in the 2011 Scholastic Art and Writing competition. It was an even bigger event when Rebekah's work was selected for display by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities. Only 44 pieces were selected from the 500 National Medalists. HHS art teacher Erin Yates received a medal and recognition from the awards program for her exemplary teaching and mentoring of HHS art students.
Ms. Lizotte and Mrs. Yates were honored in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

 
HHS Student Wins Silver Award in the National Scholastic Writing Awards -
Michaela Savell, a sophomore at Hudson High School, is the recipient of a Silver Award in the National Scholastic Writing Awards. Michaela received a Gold Key award for her poetry in the Massachusetts Scholastic Awards, and her poems were sent forward for national judging. She wins this award for a collection of four sestinas. She has been invited to participate in the awards celebration in New York.

Hudson High School's Journalism class wins the best online newspaper award at the Greater Boston High School Newspaper Competition at Suffolk University. The students competed against 35 other MA high schools. Please check out their website, www.bigredhawks.com

 
Hudson High School Students Attend UNESCO Conference in Portugal -

Six Hudson High students – Emily Cabral, Adam Cabral, Katie Dunnell, Mark Terra-Salomão, Katie Boule, and Randy Karlson, and teacher Mr. Peter Vacchina returned from Santarém, a city near Lisbon, Portugal last week, where they made a presentation about their green chemistry project at the 13th Annual UNESCO Conference for Young Scientists.
